The Dark Ages

Those of you who had tried to access our site, including this blog and MyGuide yesterday were probably surprised to find out that the site was not available. In fact, all that one got was a page showing a rather terrifying “Internal error” message which didn’t really tell us anything except send us into PANIC MODE.

OMG, did our server crash? Is our site irretrievable? Do we have any backups?

Of course, the fact that you are now reading this tells you otherwise.

We contacted Tech Support as soon as we discovered the problem, and although it took much LONGER than anticipated, the site is back and running when we woke up this morning. What a relief!

But in the interim when our site was R.I.P., I’ve had some time to rethink about the significance of our online presence in the wired world. Did it really matter that much to me?

I thought, “What if the entire blog, with all its 200+ entries, went kaput? What then?” I’m a sitting duck, in that case.

But honestly, deep inside me, I felt rather happy at the prospect of not blogging anymore. Think of all the extra time I would regain back. Heck, if that blog disappears or something, I wouldn’t even bother putting it back again, and I’d be happy to divert my energies into other worthwhile projects (I already have a few btw). Hmm, maybe even work on that Nature paper. What Nature paper?!! Told you I am a dreamer, didn’t I? 😉

And instead of bloghopping or planning what to write for my blog, I spent the evening supervising Aya’s piano practice and doing some workbook exercises with Aya. Don’t get me wrong: we do piano practice and workbook exercises almost everyday, just before we go to bed. But yesterday, we just had more time than usual.

But today the blog is back in all its original glory. When I accessed it this morning, I found my usual picture at the top of the page grinning back at me, as if to say, “I’m back, did ya miss me?!!”

Darnit. That Nature paper will have to wait.

  1. Ugh, it happens to my site too, although rarely. Luckily, my host is efficient and is only a text away should a problem occur in accessing my site.

  2. Same here – I don’t back up my blog too hehe 🙂 I count on BLOGGER to back-up everything for me. If they fall from the face of the earth tomorrow, my dear blog goes with them. But as far as my blog goes, que sera sera 🙂

  3. Wishful thinking. You/we are stuck in the blogging world unless we choose to simply quit. Oh the joys, the joys of blogging. You can back it up in blogger or wordpress. I’m sure you can figure that out.

  4. I don’t know what I will feel if that will happen to my blog considering it keeps me sane hehe

Anyway glad everything is back to normal now Kat…:)

  5. Good for you. Actually we’ve had episodes like this with our other sites (not often of course), but usually the sites are down for a few hours only, not overnight! So this latest one gave us quite a scare.

  6. I’d be happy to adopt that kind of thinking, bw! 😀 But to be safe, maybe for OUR sake you should try backing up your posts – there are more than a couple of gems there which are worth treasuring. 🙂

  7. Thanks Leah for the suggestion! I think I might just do that – put up a mirror site somewhere.

Glad to be stuck in this world with you. 🙂

  8. Verns, perhaps you should also ask: what will happen to the rest of your readers whom you keep sane? Sane and happy and laughing…and…:)
